EDWARD ALBERT GARVIN

Edward Albert Garvin departed this life on September 17, 2007, at home after an extended illness. He was a native of Savannah, born on July 3, 1923, and resided in the city all of his life. A graduate of Savannah High School, he joined the 1942 Pearl Harbor Class of the 8th Air Force, and was stationed at Sudbury, England during WWII. During his military career he served as an airplane mechanic and Chaplain’s Assistant. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Theatre Medal, six Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. His ground crew Squadron received the presidential citation for leading all other squadrons in maintenance excellence. The B-24 Liberators he helped maintain made twenty consecutive runs, reaching their targets and returning without loss of personnel or plane. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He then joined his father and brother in partnership of the Crystal Ice Company. He was later employed by the Richard M. Stone Import/Export Company and worked in Europe for several years. Mr. Garvin was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Roy Morehouse Memorial Sunday School at Epworth. Mr. Garvin also served as the organist for The Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the 1970’s. In 1998 he was awarded a US Patent for an Offset Crankshaft Mechanism for an Internal Combustion Engine.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Alice Meeks Garvin; a son, James Garvin; a daughter, Carmel Phil Hearn; and a granddaughter, Alex Hearn; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gabrielle Garvin; a sister, Marjorie Garvin; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Estelle Garvin; and a daughter-in-law, Myree Garvin.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 18, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

Interment Services will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Active and Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter Garvin, Edward D. Garvin, Bob Plank, Phil Hearn, Robert Meeks, Walter Meeks, Samuel Carter, and Dr. Frank Rizza.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah or Epworth United Methodist Church.
